Class of 2010 Community Service Project and Ecology Fair
Over the years at Greenwood, the 8th grade class has spent countless hours out of doors, away from the confines of desks and blackboards, immersed within nature’s amazing classroom.
Through Greenwood’s one-of-a-kind Nature & Environmental Studies program, the students have come to understand and celebrate the beauty of our landscape and the complex balance of our environment.
As they complete their final year at Greenwood and step into their positions as leaders and role models for the younger students, the 8th graders have made it their task to communicate to the entire community their understanding of ecological relationships, environmental awareness, and respect toward our Earth.
Each student will embark upon a topic of interest relating to sustainable living, native plant restoration, organic farming, alternative energy, cooperative housing, recycling, wild animal rehabilitation, watershed management, or community/school gardening, to name just a few possibilities.
Using the library, the Internet, and other resources, the students will look for local volunteer and service opportunities within their subject of choice. Each month, every student will be responsible for completing five hours on their project, for a total of 35 hours of community service.
The project culminates with Greenwood’s annual Science Fair, which takes place this school year on April 28, 2010. Instead of participating with the other grades in an independent science fair project, the 8th grade students will showcase their respective ecology service projects.
Next April’s Science Fair will be an evening of sharing with the entire community the knowledge and experience our graduating students have gained by volunteering time, labor, and passion to causes they believe in.
We hope to see you there.
